Bilbao Monuments and Historic Buildings: Vizcaya Bridge

The suspension bridge of Vizcaya is a very speacial bridge that links Portugalete and Las Arenas, two towns divided by the Nervión River, on the outskirts of Bilbao.
What’s special about it is that it is a transporter bridge (it is not made for vehicles to drive on, it has a gondola which picks you and your car up and carries you across the river). It’s the oldest of its kind in the world, designed by Alberto Palacio at the end of the nineteenth century.
Thanks to its special status and its historical value, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2006
