The modernist Central Market in Valencia is located in front of the building of the Lonja, the old Silk Exchange, a few steps from the metro Ángel Guimerà. The construction of the steel structure, with stained glass windows and hand-painted ceramics on the façade, was begun in 1914 and designed by students of the School of Architecture of Barcelona, the last renovation was in 2004. The Market, lit by a large central dome, contains 959 stalls for the sale of fresh fruit and vegetables from the countryside of Valencia, as well as fish and meat imported from Spain. The closing day is Sunday, and during the rest of the week the market is open from 8.00 to 14.30, except on Fridays when it closes at 20.30.
