Overall Guide : Kairouan is the city of 50 mosques. It is the spiritual home of all Tunisians. The city’s main mosque is the Sidi Oqba mosque, or the Great Mosque. It has what is believed to be the oldest standing minaret in... more the world. The zawiyya (shrine) of Sidi Sahab is claimed to house the tomb of one of the prophet’s companions. It is also called Mosque of the Barber, as he was known for always carrying with him 3 hairs of Muhammad. It contains a number of courtyards, a madrasa, a mosque, a funduq (dormitory) and a 9th century Aghlabid reservoir. The zawiyya of Sidi el Ghariani is a beautiful tomb with 14th century woodcarving and stuccowork. Surprisingly, the tomb inside is of Hafsid sultan Moulay Hassan, a distant relative. The Bi'r Barouta well is an important Islamic site, believed to be the site of an ancient miracle where water sprung onto the desert; it is the historical focal point of Kairouan.  The Artisan Centre provides an excellent exhibit on carpets and carpet weaving. Kairouan is the oldest and most renowned carpet centre in Tunisia.
