Overall Guide : Visit the family mausoleum of the former President Habib Bourguiba. A grand cemetery with its gold and green domes and gilt-tipped minarets make for a spectacular sight. Explore the Ribat of Harthema down by the sea. Also visit the... more Ribat of Monastir, an ancient religious and military site. Today the old prayer hall, the oldest part of the Ribat, has been converted into a Museum. The displays here include pottery, ancient Islamic writings, fabrics, etc. The monastery, after which the town was named, was built in 797AD to defend the town from roaming nomadic tribes and Byzantine warships. Today the fortress houses a museum of Islamic art and artifacts. The picturesque marina and beaches allow for scuba diving and other water sporting activities. It is also dotted with a variety of cafés and restaurants. The main mosque of Monastir, was built in the 9th century, and rebuilt in the 11th. The Medina is surrounded by a battlemented wall built in the 18th century. It has a lively souk and lots of little cafes where you can try some local delicacies.
