Monastir is a city in central Tunisia. Situated in the Sahel area, Monastir is home to an estimated 41,400 inhabitants.
The city enjoys a Mediterranean climate with the average annual temperatures in the range of 13-20C.  

Previously a Phoenician trading post, Monastir was founded on the ruins of the Punic Roman city of Ruspina.
A traditional fishing port, Monastir today is a major tourist resort.

Today the old prayer hall, the oldest part of the Ribat, has been converted into a Museum. The displays here include pottery, ancient Islamic writings, fabrics, etc. The monastery, after which the town was named, was built in 797AD to defend the town from roaming nomadic tribes and Byzantine warships. Today the fortress houses a museum of Islamic art and artifacts. The picturesque marina and beaches allow for scuba diving and other water sporting activities. It is also dotted with a variety of cafés and restaurants. The main mosque of Monastir, was built in the 9th century, and rebuilt in the 11th. The Medina is surrounded by a battlemented wall built in the 18th century. It has a lively souk and lots of little cafes where you can try some local delicacies.
