Sousse is a city in central Tunisia. Located on the Gulf of Hammamet, it is home to 430,000 inhabitants.
The city enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and gentle warm, wet winters.
Founded in the 9th century BC by the Phoenicians, Sousse was originally named Hadrumet. It served as a military post as well as an important port.
The local economy is based on the processed food, olive oil and textile industry as well as tourism. It also has a bustling busy port.

Overall Guide : The city retains its medieval charm. The old city is a maze of narrow, twisted streets, bazaars, and the Kasbah. The Kasbah, a large fort, was built in 1100-1600. This fortification offers a glorious view of the medina. It also... more houses the Sousse Archaeological Museum which has a beautiful collection of mosaics and ancient artefacts like masks, statues and burial tombs. The Ribat of Sousse, a smaller fort, was built much earlier in 820AD. In the olden days, its soaring structure combined the purposes of a minaret and a watch tower. It houses a mosque and a mosaic museum in the compound. The Catacombs of Sousse are a fascinating sight. Catacombs were shelters for the dead. These tunnels originally stretched for more than 5 km and contained 15,000 graves. Today, only a portion of this is open to public. A port city, Sousse is home to beautiful sand beaches. Added to this are the orchards and olive groves, making Sousse the perfect place to unwind. At the beaches you can enjoy aquatic sports like windsurfing and snorkeling. Sousse hosts several festivals across the year. These include the Sousse International Festival in July-August., the Mediterranean Olive Tree Festival in December, and the Sidi El Kantaoui Festival in July.

Overall Guide : Very safe place to holiday, friendly people and helpful. Plenty of tours to do including history tours etc. Plenty of souks and markets and for anyone not wanting to haggle there are government run shops with set prices.Lovely beaches and... more lots of activities like boat trips. Lots of golf courses, horse riding, camel treks and trips to the desert and starwars film sets. Best time to go if you don't want it too hot and crowded is spring and autumn although I have been in December and it has been warm.Lots of nightlife and most hotels have entertainment. The Tunisians love families and will make young children feel special. One of the fewest crime rates in Africa.
Not to be missed Troglodyk caves , the sahara desert , kantaoui
