Al Bastakiya in Dubai
Dubai Streets and Neighbourhoods: information about Al Bastakiya
Al Bastakiya is a historic district in Dubai. Together with Al Shindagha , Al Bastakiya is one of the oldest residential areas in the city of Dubai. The locality lies along Dubai Creek and includes narrow lanes and wind towers, as well as the Al Fahidi Fort, the oldest existing building in Dubai. Traditionally a stronghold of rich Persian merchants, the demographic of the locality changed with the discovery of oil, which resulted in many rich families relocating to other parts of the city.
Being the oldest quarter of Dubai, here you can see the old style of the houses at their raw state. The uniqueness of this house lies in the characteristic wind towers, that funnel the wind and spread in the house, a primitive yet effective air conditioning. Some of these old buildings have been renovated and now you can find cafes, art galleries and original shops.
