The city of La Paz is situated in the valley of the Choqueyapu River in Bolivia.  It is located on a plateau at an altitude of approximately 3,600 m above sea level.
Due to its altitude, the climate here is mostly cold and dry. In winters, temperatures fall to about 1°C, while in summers they reach up to 17°C.  Rainfall occurs mainly in the afternoons during the summer months.
La Paz has a population of 1,250,000 people. The majority of inhabitants are of Amerindian descent and consist of the Quechuas, Aymaras, Chiquitano and Guarani. There is also a sizeable Mestizo populace, and also some of European descent.
The culture is heavily influenced by the local Amerindian population, especially the Quechua and the Aymara. The official languages that are spoken are Spanish, Quechua and Aymara.
