Info about Sofia

1344 km2
560 m

Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, is located to the north of the Vitosha Mountains. With a population of over 2,000,000, it is the largest city in the country and the fifteenth largest European city.
Located in the western region of Bulgaria, several rivers, including the Vladayska and the Iskar, cross the city. At an elevation of 550 m, the temperatures range from -6°C in the winter to 26°C in the summer, making the months of May to September, the best time to visit.
The city developed due to its central Balkan region. It has been invaded by every major empire including the Macedonians, Romans, Ottomans and Soviets. Modern Sofia is a blend of culture, history and a rapidly growing market economy with skyrocketing real estate prices and a booming outsourcing market.

Overall Guide : The historic aspect of Sofia begins with the tenth century Boyana Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city also boasts the world’s largest Orthodox Church, the Alexander Nevski Cathedral and an early Byzantine church, the Church of St. Sophia.... more The Sofia Synagogue and the sixteenth century Banya Bashi Mosque highlight the diverse religious history of the country. Vitosha Park is one of the many parks in the city covering a large section of the mountain. The park offers visitors access to many tennis courts, a cycling track and a visit to the Bulgarian football stadium. The Zapaden Park offers several sports facilities as well. The Sofia Municipality organises open-air festivals at the Spartak swimming pool. Sofia offers numerous shopping districts and the chance to visit Tzum, the largest and oldest department store in the city. Several restaurants, nightclubs and casinos offer tourists entertainment even after the sun goes down.

Overall Guide : My sister and I arrived in Sofia and hired a car. I drove across the mountains to Varna, The mountains are stunningly beautiful, and for skiing I should think very nice. Then on to drive the whole length of the... more Black sea coast we were so disappointed and it is "not really beautiful" then back to Sofia. The infrastructure is non existant and there are just so very many Gypsies. Although we were not frightened or threatened, you must always be on your guard. I feel it is not a safe country. The food was very inexpensive and good in the centre of the city areas. I have driven across the world but the drivers (in motor vehicles) here are the worst ever and we encountered a bad accident, because the peasants/gypsies still have wooden carts and move slower, the motor vehicles drivers are tearing past them and often into oncoming traffic. It is a poor country We would never go there again.

Overall Guide : Nice places to visit, both for culture and entertainment, as well as tourism (the mountain of Vitosha is just 10 km away and during the winter one can go and ski there). The transport however is not very good and... more the metro has only one line.
Overall rating 7
Overall Guide : Beware the taxi drivers, most of them try to get more money from you if they understand that you are a tourist.
