Drepung Monastery was founded in 1416 by Jamyang Chojey and is situated on the outskirts of Lhasa. Once known to be the largest and the most influential monastery in Tibet, this historic building had over 10,000 monks. At present, there are around 700 monks and the place attracts visitors and pilgrims from across the globe. This site is known as one of the “Three Great Monasteries”, with the other two being the Sera Monastery and the Ganden Monastery.
