At the time of Roman rule, Cologne was surrounded by high city walls which could have been effective in defending the city from attack. The walls were greatly expanded between the tenth and thirteenth centuries, and the construction of the Hahnentorburg is dated to this period.
It was probably built between 1235 and 1240 and it’s the most impressive of the twelve towers that marked the entrance to the old town. Over time it has become a symbol of the city, and it was saved from demolition in the late nineteenth century.
