For all of those who love trekking and hiking, Crete is the ideal island of Greece to enjoy a really interesting walk that will let you discover the very beautiful places and the peaks of the island.

One of the landmarks you can't possibly miss are the Samaria Gorge, a very nice route between rocks and vegetation towards one of the deepest gorges in Europe; during the tour you can also visit the small village of Samaria. You must remember that the gorges, from November to March are not accessible all the way because the water can overflow at different levels.

The famous white mountains of Lefka Ori are spectacular, where, with a little luck, you may spot a  vulture; here the trek can reach different altitudes: you can stop at 1680 meters at the Kollergi lodge where you can relax and enjoy a delicious greek yogurt with honey, or go up the mountain Gingilos at 1980 meters and then touch the 2133 meters of altitude reaching up to Volakias mountain, from where you can enjoy an amazing view.

Another route passes through the Gorges of Aradena until you get to Loutro, in a journey that will reveal the ruins of Byzantine buildings and churches. There are many hiking trails, the European path E4 is one of the most beautiful: you can make it in five days and is about 90 kilometers long. The daily stages are: Elafonissi-Cape Krios; Paleochora-Sougia; Gorges Irinini- Sougia; Agia Roumeli-Loutro; Loutro-Livaniana-Gorges of Aradena-village of Aradena. The daily walking time is about four to five hours.

The various rocky areas of the island are the perfect places for climbing, and are suitable for various  levels of difficulty. At Lerapetra in the southern part of the island, there is one of the most special places to go... more climbing: the gorge of Ha, 1.5 km long and very narrow. It is one of the places where climbing is more difficult, therefore, reserved especially for experts, but from the top you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the sea. Very suitable for climbing are also the different cliffs scattered on the island, like the one of Plakias, a vertical plate of limestone which overlooks the beach of the homonymous village, and the one of Agio Farago, the so-called Throat of the saints, the most important area of the island for climbing where huge caves alternate with beautiful gray walls. Those of Theriso Farangi are other cliffs that are located within a narrow canyon a few miles from the picturesque city of Chania.
