The city of Antigua is located amidst the central mountains of Guatemala. It lies in a highland valley surrounded by three spectacular volcanoes, the Volcan de Agua, the Acatenango and the Volcan de Fuego. The climate is temperate and pleasant.
The city has a population of about 33,000 people. The Mestizos and the descendants of the Spanish make up most of the population. The rest of the population comprises mainly of the descendants of the Amerindians.
The culture is a unique mixture of the ancient Mayan and Spanish. Although the official language in Antigua is Spanish, several Mayan and Amerindian dialects are also spoken.

Overall Guide : Antigua has a lot to offer such as a vibrant night life, many bars and restaurants, fine art galleries, many historical monuments and nature reserves. The city is especially famous for its Baroque architecture and is also a UNESCO World... more Heritage Site. The Central Park is the heart of the city and has beautifully restored fountains. The Catedral Metropolitana is a perfect example of the colonial architecture of the Spanish. The Palacio de los Capitanes was the palace of the Spanish governors and is another excellent example of the architecture of that period. The Colonial Museum has large exhibits of colonial artwork and is a good place to learn more about the history and culture of the region. The neighbouring towns and villages that should be visited for their beautiful churches are Ciudad Vieja, Jocotenango and Santa Catalina Barahona. Antigua is also famous for elaborate religious celebrations in the week leading up to Easter.

Overall Guide : I found this little town to be quite fascinating and full of thing to see and do. There are several city guide people that are remarkably skilled at English to show you around all the sites. They run about 170... more Q for about two hours. Their information was fantastic and informative. There is free parking and overnight camping at the Policia de Turismo.
Not to be missed San Jose catedral , Pacaya Volcano , San Agustin
