Cherrapunji is a town in East Khasi Hills district in Meghalaya state.
Currently this place holds two Guinness world records wherein the first is for the maximum amount of rainfall in a single year during August 1860 to July 1861 and second is for the maximum amount of rainfall in a single month in July 1861.
The altitude of Cherrapunji is 1484 meters and it is located on the southern most tip of a plateau that overlooks over Bangladesh. T
he moisture that forms over the Bay of Bengal results in a downpour first in the cliffs of this place, but as there is no reservoir to hold the water, it quickly flows towards the plains of Bangladesh. The annual average rainfall of this place is 11,430 meters.
As per the census of 2001, the population of Cherrapunji was 10086.
