Indore is located at a height of 553 meters above sea level on the Malwa plateau on the banks of two small rivelets – the Khan and the Saraswati.
In the center of the city, these two unite at a place where there is an 18th century temple of Indreshwar or Sangamnath and this diety is the origin of the word Indore.
As Indore is located in central India far away from the sea it has a moderately extreme climate. During winter, the temperature may drop up to 1.5 degrees Celsius and in summer may soar up to 45 degrees Celsius.
An interesting aspect is that although it may be very hot during the day in the evenings there is a cool breeze due to which the evening becomes very pleasant. From July to September, there is a moderate rainfall amounting to approximately 80 centimeters.
As per the 2001 census, the population of Indore was 1.597 million.
