The Benedictine Monastery, in its original project, should have been a colossal building with four cloisters and a majestic church in the middle, the Church of S. Francesco La Rena.

Out of four cloisters, only two were set up and the church remained incomplete.

The Benedictine Monastery is very significant and one of the biggest in Europe; nowadays it hosts the University Humanities department.

Built in 1578 and destroyed by the 1693 earthquake, it was rebuilt in 1703.

You can admire the eastern and southern prospects, together with the Neoclassical main staircase and the first cloister.
