For the past seven centuries it has been the focus of political and civic life of Florence, when it became the seat of the lordship in the sixteenth century, as well as withstanding numerous renovations and interior decoration, it became known as the "Palace of the lordship" or "Palazzo della signoria" in fact. In 1871 it became the seat of the Municipality of Florence.
