Yasukuni Shrine was founded in 1869 as Tokyo Shokonsha and was renamed as Yasukuni Shrine in 1879. Built to commemorate and worship the martyrs who died in war for their country, it is home to deities of around 2.5 million people who sacrificed their lives for their country. A museum, Yushukan commemorates the wars of Japan and is situated next to the main building of the shrine.
