Sigulda is a small town located close to the capital city of Riga in Latvia. This town of approximately 10,000 inhabitants is popularly known as the ‘winter capital of Latvia’.
Sigulda enjoys a temperate climate, cool and damp throughout the year. July and August are the warmest months but they also see a fair bit of rainfall. Since it is at an altitude, Sigulda is cooler than the other neighbouring cities.
Sigulda is nested within the Guaja river valley, and the red sandstone cliffs and caves in the area have earned it the title of ‘Switzerland of Latvia’.
This area has been inhabited for over 4,000 years. Since Latvia’s independence in 1991, Sigulda has been developing as a health resort and winter retreat. But, the development has been slow paced, and thus, the town has been able to preserve its Old World charm and beauty.
