Maseru means the place of red sandstone, and is located in the west of Lesotho in the relative lowlands at about 1,000 metres.
The city’s river is called Mohokare.
Maseru became Lesotho’s capital in 1869, when the British Governor founded his headquarters here.
Many old colonial buildings from the early century can still be seen. It is a young, but growing city.
Today, Maseru is the major gateway for travellers coming by air, and for drivers coming from Johannesburg and Bloemfontein, but it is also a pleasant spot for tourists to enjoy and a comfortable base for visiting the Western and Northern attractions of Lesotho.
