Isla Blanca is approximately 25 minutes north of Cancun and can be reached by car (the not-so-perfect public transport system certainly doesn’t make it out here). It is a real hidden wonder with (as the name suggests) clear white sands framed on the one side by the Chacmuchuk Lagoon and on the other by the Caribbean sea.
It’s possible to camp on the beach, rent a rustic cabin for the night or just visit for the day - it's a tranquil oasis for those who want to escape the large resorts and busy beaches. A kite boarding school attracts the adventure crowd, their brightly colored sails dotting the sky over the lagoon.
For directions ask locals or the your hotel or hostel staff. It is down a dirt road and even beyond the reaching tentacles of the modern electricity grid - so don’t expect to have all the conveniences of home as power comes from limited generators. There are not yet any well stocked convenience stores here so if you’re staying for a day or so bring anything like water and snacks that you may find yourself wanting!
