Overview

Swakopmund is a beach city in Namibia. It falls under the Erongo administrative division. Being the second largest city, Swakopmund has a total area of 181 sq km. With the Atlantic Ocean on its west, the city is bounded by the Namib Desert on three sides.
The coastal city of Swakopmund has a temperate climate. The mean temperatures of the city ranges between 15°C and 25°C. The city receives very less rainfall, about 15 mm annually. The main source of moisture for the flora and fauna in the city is fog, which can be attributed to the Benguela Current. Due to its climate, the city serves as the traditional summer capital of Namibia.

The city has an approximate population of 35,000 inhabitants. Founded in 1892 by Captain Curt van Francois, Swakopmund served as the central harbour for the German South West Africa.

Overall Guide : Providing for the perfect summer retreat from the sweltering summers of the interiors, Swakopmund has several beach resorts for its visitors to unwind. Those with a penchant for adventure sports can indulge in quad biking and sand boarding in the... more nearby Namib Desert. Avid bird-watchers should visit the Walvis Bay Lagoon, usually frequented by beautiful flamingos. The Welwitschia drive is the best way to witness the flora and fauna of the Namib Desert. The Cape Cross Seal Colony offers a taste of the Skeleton Coast. The city’s German inheritance is best exemplified in the architecture of the city. Certain notable buildings in Swakopmund include the Altes Gefängnis prison and the Wörmannhaus, which is now used as the public library. Visitors can also visit the transport museum in the city. A must visit is the National Marine Aquarium. Other sites worth visiting in the city include the lighthouse and the Swakopmund Jetty.

It is great to have a transfer to the boat and back to the hotel for free and the cruise is just great with... more a very friendly crew. Having seals on board, viewing dolphins jump next to the boat and meet with pelican "JJ" and his family! An awesome experience!!!
