Hawera can be described as the 2nd-biggest town located in Taranaki area of ‘New Zealand’s’ North Island.
Hawera is situated adjoining coast of South Taranaki Bight; at the distance of 75 Km on the southern side of ‘New Plymouth’ along State Highway 3; and at 20 minutes’ drive with respect to Mount Egmont or Mount Taranaki.
Hawera is home of the biggest dairy factory complex within Southern Hemisphere.  Fonterra is the owner of this complex.
The word ‘Hawera’ means ‘burnt place’ in ‘Maori’. This nomenclature was attained out of fight between 2 local sub-tribes; that went on to culminate in to burning of sleeping whare of tribe ‘under attack’. Moreover, the name was thought to be apt following ablazes in the years 1884, 1888, and 1912.

Overall Guide : Hi my name is Ellen and I love south taranaki as i lived there for over 3 years but i find that some of the places to visit are hard to find especially as there are not a lot of... more sign posts for the musem that is just out of Harwera. The township it self is a very beautiful place to visit but needs more things for familys to do especially on holidays and even a little tour bus for people to catch to the beach of oponaki which tourist would love, thank you.
Not to be missed Tawhiti Museum , shopping and cafes , water tower
