Info about Taupo

6970 km2
360 m

Taupo is located at the north-east end of Lake Taupo, New Zealand’s largest lake. The town was formed as a result of massive volcanic eruptions many years ago. It is typified by a temperate climate, with the summer temperatures ranging from 10°C–25°C and winter temperatures ranging from 1°C–12°C.
Taupo has a population of 20,000; the topography of the region consists of volcanic mountains, some of which are still active, lakes and considerable vegetation.
The first settlers of the region were from the Tuwharetoi Maori tribe, who arrived in the thirteenth century. European settlers arrived only in the early nineteenth century. Until the twentieth century, Taupo was still underdeveloped; however, then the potential for geothermal energy and tourism were realised.

Overall Guide : I was born in Rotorua in 1937 and lived in Haywards General Store and Tea Rooms at Wairakei opposite the Wairakei Resort.I have seen Taupo grow from small beginings to the present days. Huka falls used to have a swing... more bridge then but now there is a much more stable crossing. There is so much to see in the area without having to travel too far. The Aratiatia rapids is very worth the short trip so is the Crater of the moon plus the Maori village by the Bp Service station ( that is the site where our shop used to be ). I recommend Taupo and district to anyone seeking Fun, History, shopping, Maori Culture and a piece of NZ.John..
Not to be missed Maori model village and pools , Cater of the Moon , Aratiatia Rapids
