Often referred to as the ‘Pearl of the South’, Encarnacio is located in south-eastern Paraguay. Approximately 400 kilometres south-east of the capital Asunción, this city is at the southern tip of the country on the River Paraná.
With a population of 69,769 residents, the city is divided into two distinct sections: the old city by the river and the new commercial district further inland.
Although the region has high levels of humidity with considerable rainfall, Encarnacio has a mild climate. Summers extend from October to March and the winters from April to October, which also witnesses the heaviest rainfall.
Encarnacio was founded by the Jesuits in 1615. Apart from the Spanish descendants, Encarnacio also has a few Germans, Ukrainians, Koreans, Arabs and Poles, who are mostly engaged in agriculture and commerce.
