Cuzco, Peru

Description

If you plan on visiting the captivating city of Cuzco, Peru, you may want to learn the basics of how to get around the region, as well as how best to access its must-see travel destinations. While many of the places in Cuzco are reachable by foot, there are others that you will need alternate modes of transportation for.

In Cuzco, taxis charge a standard rate, and are very practical. If you need to use a bus, then you probably aren't going anywhere inside the city, as most of those attractions are easy to walk to. The buses are usually used for reaching destinations outside of town, such as Pisac or the Sacred Valley.

You'll want to use the train when visiting the ancient mountain city of Machu Picchu. The train station is located southwest of the Plaza de Armas, and is called Estación de San Pedro. During the summer time it's important to make reservations for these trains a day or two in advance, as they can fill up at a moment's notice.

Renting a car in Cuzco often makes sense, as you may be planning on visiting several destinations in and around the general region. The prices are reasonable and there are several accommodating car rental services. However, if you want to just see the inner city of Cuzco, then perhaps you should look into a tranvía tour. These local tours employ carts that closely resemble those pulled by mules in Cuzco's olden days.
