Funchal

Funchal is the capital of the Portuguese island of Madeira and is situated between the cities of Santa Cruz and Camara de Lobos. The Funchal International Airport is based in Santa Cruz city.
The natural geological features of Funchal form a unique ‘Amphitheatre’ surrounding the city. This amphitheatre type formation is almost 1200 m high on gentler slopes and begins at the harbour. Funchal also has rich subtropical vegetation and gets its name from the abundance of fennel (‘funcho’ in Portuguese) grown in the region.
The climate here is very mild, with temperatures ranging from 22°C in summer to 16°C in winter; the region also experiences moderate humidity.
About 140,000 people reside in the city of Funchal. The renowned Madeira wines, fish and fruit form some of the chief exports of the city.

Recensioni Funchal

Overall Guide : Not many people know that the international football player Cristiano Ronaldo was born in Funchal. Many football lovers consider it a sort of pilgrimage when visiting the birthplace of one of football’s biggest stars. The city is also home to the ... Leggi tutto Sé Cathedral, a Manueline-style masterpiece with an entirely wooden ceiling. The Palace of São Pedro is an impressive eighteenth century structure, which houses among others the Municipal Museum and the Funchal Aquarium. Move around the city with the help of Carros de Cesta (basketwork frame toboggans) and Carre de Bois (ox drawn carriages) as they are handy means of transport and, more importantly, heritage objects that attract tourists. When in town, don’t forget to visit Monte parish, which is around 9 km away from the city centre. The 1,000 hectare Ecological Park of Funchal and the lively Festival of Nossa Senhora do Monte (held every year on 14 August) makes Monte a must-visit.
