Located at a distance of 402 km from Caracas, Cumaná is the state capital of Sucre in Venezuela. It was the first city to be founded in South America. The city was founded on the banks of the river Manzanares by the Spanish settlers in 1521 under the leadership of Gonzalo de Ocampo.
The city, spread over an area 11,800 sq km, has a population of 305,000. The terrain of the region is fairly flat with a few hills. December to May is the best time of the year to visit the city as the weather remains cool, dry and pleasant during this period.
The city was home to some admirable pieces of architecture much of which was destroyed following three earthquakes in 1684, 1765 and 1929. The economy of Cumaná is dependent mainly on the exports of items such as coffee, cotton goods and also the canning and sardine fishing industry.
