The city of Burlington is located approximately located at the geographic center of the Golden Horseshoe, towards the south western end of Lake Ontario, Canada. Towards south of the city is Hamilton and the Peninsula of Niagara.  The Beach strip, a large sandbar, located on the western end of the Burlington Bay was deposited in the last ice age. A part of the Halton Region politically, it also belongs to the Greater Toronto Area.
Due to the nearness of Lake Ontario the Moderate climate is found in the area which is located in the temperate climate zone. The area has the presence of various flora and fauna which are typically found in the southern region. Paw-paw, green dragon, Tuckahoe, wall-rue, American Colombo, the hooded warbler, the Louisiana waterthrush and flying squirrel are some unique life forms that are found here.
The city covers an area of 187 square km and had a population of 164,415 in 2006. The area has a dense forest and was home to First Nations people before 1812. The name of the city was christened by John Graves Simcoe in 1792.
