Corfu is the principal town of the Greek island of Corfu, which lies in the eastern Ionian Sea off the coast of Albania. The town has around 36,000 in habitants.
The island is rich in history, both from Greek mythology, with its connections to Poseidon, God of the Sea, and Homer’s Odyssey, and from its history of upheaval and conquest due to its strategic position.
The legacy of the latter can be seen in the form of two castles that protected the city of Corfu.
Today the town acts as a focus for the island’s thriving tourist industry and is the main site of the Ionian University.

Near the old Venetian Citadel are also two large squares, ‘Ano Plateia’ and ‘Kato Plateia’ with park lawns and interesting buildings such as a Roman-style rotunda from the time of the British Protectorate, where the local Philharmonic orchestra plays. Cricket matches are also held here, another legacy of the British. The Neo Frourio (New Fortress) is a giant maze of fortified structures in the north-eastern part of the city. It is now open to the public and tours take place in the complex of medieval corridors and fortifications. Just to the North of ‘Kato Plateia’ are the ‘Palaia Anaktora’ (‘Old Palaces’), an area of Romano buildings once a residence of the King of Greece. Today they are home to art exhibits including a Museum of Chinese Art. The Palace Gardens with, trees flowers and ponds overlook the bay and are a place to relax and sample Greek coffee and ‘ouzo’ at the café.
