Kolhapur is located on the banks of river Panchganga in Maharashtra at an average elevation of 545 meters.
It is an ancient city known for wrestling, jewellery, footwear, headwear, food and religious associations.
The majority of the people here are Marathas along with small communities of Sindhis, Lingayats, Maharashtrian Jains, Marwadis and Gujaratis.
The trade in this city is related with sugarcane, metal industry, mining and textiles. This city is one of the highest per-capita incomes in India.
As per the census of 2001, the population of Kolhapur was 0.485 million. The temperature in Kolhapur varies between 12 and 35 degrees Celsius. From June to September there is heavy rainfall which often leads to floods.
