The city is well known tourist destination. Shimla has dense forests surrounding it. Trees found in the forests are that of oak, rhododendron, pine and deodar. The city is home to 721,745 people as per 2001 census. Maximum people are natives of the state, a mixed cosmopolitan crowd of different races and tribes like Gaddis, Gujars, Lahaulis and Kinners. They follow their own religions and cultures. They speak the Pahadi language, a native dialect. Apart from tourism which adds up good revenues to city, people in Shimla earn their livelihood mainly from agriculture.

The Sankat Mochan Temple is the temple of Lord Hanuman the mighty monkey deity who is amongst the most worshipped gods in the Hindu pantheon. Lord Hanuman is said to be the destroyer of all troubles. Many devotees come regularly to offer prayers in the temple. From this temple one can get a picturesque view of Shimla. The Summer Hill is another popular region for the tourists to visit. It provides great views of the beautiful city.
