Ubud, a town in central Bali, is located in Indonesia. Surrounded by rice fields, Ubud also known as the ‘Heartland of Bali’ is a popular tourist attraction. With a population of around 8,000 inhabitants, it is also the arts and cultural centre of Bali.
Ubud has a mild and favourable climate throughout the year. The dry season from May to September is warm and pleasant, while the rainy season between October and April is characterised by tropical showers.
During the tenth and the twelfth centuries, Shivaite holy men established hermitages and monasteries near Ubud. Many of the dances, music and superstitions originated during this period.
Ubud is renowned for its unique bamboo crafts, furniture, wood and stone carvings. Traditional dances, drama, puppet and plays are used to animate Ubud culture.
