Clifden, the largest town in Connemara, is located in County Galway in Ireland. Often referred to as ‘the Capital of Connemara’, Clifden is situated on the Owenglin River and is a popular tourist destination especially if one is touring Connemara.
Located on the west coast of Ireland, this town enjoys a mild climate along with ample rainfall under the influence of the Gulf Stream, with severe windstorms between August and March. Extreme conditions like blizzards, thunderstorms or flash flooding, though rare, can be expected.
In the early 1900s, Guglielmo Marconi built his transatlantic wireless telegraphy station in this town. Today with a population of about 3,200 inhabitants, the woollen and tweed industry contribute to the local economy here.

Overall Guide : Clifden is a busy market town with a wide variety of shops, pubs and restaurants. Here, one can indulge in activities like deep sea-fishing, nature walking, golfing, or spend time listening to music in the pubs during the evenings. One can... more visit the Connemara National Park, the famous championship links Golf Club, the Alcock and Brown landing site and the Marconi site. Boat tours to the longest fjord in Ireland take place several times in a day. There are several events and festivities all year round and perhaps the most popular of them is the Clifden Pony Show that has been conducted in the third week of August since 1924. Then there is the Clifden Community Arts Week in September with a host of concerts, poetry reading, lectures, recitals and traditional music. The Omey Island Races is a horse-racing event on the beach and the Clifden Regatta is a boat sailing competition organized by the Clifden Boat Club.
