Chihuahua City is the capital of the Mexican state of Chihuahua. The name ‘Chihuahua’ is a Nahualt (indigenous language) word which means ‘dry sandy zone’, representing the vast desert area in Chihuahua.
It was in Chihuahua that Miguel Hidalgo (considered the Father of Mexico) was imprisoned and executed. Benito Juarez, five-time Mexican President also resided in Chihuahua.
The climate is arid and dry all year round, although rainfall is regular. The annual average temperature is 18°C. Travel can be avoided between June and October, the rainy season.
Invaded by the Spanish and French, Chihuahua was home to native tribes too, giving this city a rich culture. Primarily a mining town during the colonial era, the population of 749,000 mainly works in ‘maquiladoras’, foreign manufacturing facilities.

Overall Guide : Chihuahua has a rich history associated with it, now exhibited in its many museums. On Plaza Hidalgo is the Federal Palace with the prison cell where Miguel Hidalgo was imprisoned. Nearby is the Government Palace, where he was executed. The... more Church of San Francisco contains his remains while the Museo Histórico de la Revolución (or Pancho Villa Museum) contains Hidalgo’s personal mementos. The Museo Casa de Juárez contains memorabilia related to Benito Juarez’s visit. Other museums include the Museo de Arte Popular, which exhibits the life and customs of the Natives. The Regional Museum (or Quinta Gameros) is one of Mexico’s finest examples of Art Nouveau, and houses exhibits on Chihuahuan archaeology and history. Other places worth visiting include the Cathedral of St Francis of Assisi with a Baroque façade. The Churches of Santa Rita and Guadalupe are worth your while too. You could purchase the Chihuahua dog in the Sunday Market.

Overall Guide : The city is enormous with gridlock in the dowtown area. But it makes up for it in the exciting Mexican culture, where it combines old and new. Chihuahua is fast becoming an impressive icon of the border states and boasts... more large manufacturing, commercial, and tourist districts.
Not to be missed Downtown! , Metropolitan Cathedral , Plaza del Sol Shopping District
