Braga is capital of ‘district of Braga’; i.e. the most ancient archidiocese. It’s also one amongst the main cities within Portugal.
Braga is the 7th biggest municipality all over Portugal; just after Lisbon, Sintra, Oporto, Loures, and Cascais municipality. This includes parishes of Braga and its suburbs. As such, Braga municipality has around 62 parishes. It’s also center of Greater Metropolitan Area of Minho.
Under Roman Empire, this place was called Bracara Augusta. It had been capital of Gallaecia then. Urban region goes on to extend between river Cavado and river Este. This place is being serviced by fast and regional trains to Lisbon and Porto. Oporto lies at the distance of 53 Km from Braga.
Braga had been inhabited since the pre-historic era. In Iron Age, Bracari people went on to occupy this area.

Overall Guide : A nice city to visit for a romantic break or for a bit of culture. The city centre is quite compact and that makes it an ideal place to visit for a couple of days. It has museums, cafes, esplanades... more and quirky shops galore. Outside the centre, there are many monuments wirth having a look, with special mention to Bom Jesus do Monte, Citania de Briteiros (Celtic village) and Mosteiro de Tibaes. It is also located half way between the beach and the lakes of the North, each of which accessible in less than 30 min by car.
Not to be missed Bom Jesus , Se catedral , Theatro de Circo
