Info about Dakar

Area:
82 km2
Overview

Dakar, estimated population more than 2 million inhabitants, is not only Senegal’s capital city but its administrative, communications, and economic centre, too.
The city is located on the Cap Vert peninsula on the country's Atlantic coast.
Thanks to its strategic position, on western edge of Africa, Dakar is a very good departure point for trans-Atlantic and European trade and a major regional port.
Dakar grew up around a French fort built in 1857 after residents moved from the nearby island of Gorée and in 1902 it replaced Saint-Louis as the capital of French West Africa.
It was the capital of the short-lived Mali Federation from 1959 to 1960, after which it became the capital of Senegal.
Today, Dakar is a cosmopolitan city where businessmen and tourists, European clothes and traditional dress, colonial-style villas and big modern buildings, new residential areas and the Medina, the old quarter, cohabit in an incredible mix.
Dakar's international airport is the main stopping point for flights from Europe to South America.
Dakar is also the finishing point of the world famous Paris Dakar Rally.

Overall Guide : I am an American woman and I moved here over 13 years ago with my three American children. They all went to Senegalese schools (IB program) and now speak 3 languages (english, french, wolof). 2 are in the states, 1... more graduated university, 1 started this year and the youngest is still here in Dakar with me and will finish up next year. As I am an anglophone, I found services for English speakers lacking. I also couldn't get any decent advice. The problem with reviews of Dakar by other anglophones is: they aren't here long enough to give accurate assessments because they don't understand what they are looking at, why something is the way it is (there may be a very good reason!) and where the places are that the locals go to get away from the tourist areas! With this in mind, I am sharing with you a series of businesses that focus EXCLUSIVELY on the big picture, honesty & integrity (with a easily accessible online track record, google 'SenegalStyle), economy/budget pricing, ease of use and convenience. That's pretty much what people want when they're in a country where they don't speak the language.
Not to be missed African Renaissance Statue , SenegalStyle City Tour , Day Trippin' Tours outside of the city

Overall Guide : Dakar is site of several fine museums, as the IFAN Museum of West African culture which displays a great number of artefacts from across Africa. There are two big markets in Dakar: Marché Kermel, the main tourist market; Marché... more Sandage, where can be found a wonderful amount of clothing and cloth. Dakar’s main beaches include the Plage Bel-Air and the cleanest N’Gor and Yoff. Other good beaches near the city are Yenn and Toubab Dialao which are famous for their spectacular red cliffs. Other attractions in Dakar include Dakar Grand Mosque, built in 1964, the Institut Fondamental d’Afrique Noir, the President’s Palace, the National Gallery and the Hann Park, home to Senegal Zoo.

Overall Guide : For tourism maybe only limited to local attraction and seaside views. But for work, it's good. But keep in mind that this is Africa, don't get too much expectation. Compared to Europe, the price is quiet a bargain, but compared... more to Asia, it's more expensive

Overall Guide : A city of very kind people. Not in my opinion dangerous at all. People may look at you but they are very nice. If you buy food like bread or fruits, buy it from privat sellers on the street, price... more is much cheaper and a small sum is big for them. It's a beautiful but rather polluted city.
Not to be missed Goree Island , Sea Plaza

Overall Guide : I was born in Diourbel and know Senegal as it's my native country. I speak Ouolof (no doubt about it). I am living in London, UK. I wish people from Europe to go and visit this lovely country where I... more grew up and learnt at Lycee Lamine Gueye (former Van Vollenhoven) in Dakar. I cannot forget my childhood which was full of memories.

Overall Guide : The most defining aspect of Dakar is the genuine hospitality of the people. In the day time every house leaves it's front door open. This is a symbol of hospitality meaning that any person is welcome into the household and... more will receive the best of treatment. It's definitely a place to visit and remember.
Not to be missed Goree Island , Downtown ( Central Dakar ) , La Maison des Esclaves
