Lugano is located in the extreme south of Switzerland very close to the Italian border. Owing to its location, Italian influence is extremely visible in all aspects of life in this town. This lakeside town of approximately 53,000 inhabitants is located along the shore of Lake Lugano.
Lugano enjoys a Mediterranean climate with long periods of sunshine. The average summertime temperature is 25°C. The surrounding mountains save the town from a bitter winter, but at times, the temperature does drop to 0°C.
For many years of its early history Lugano was the cause of many disputes between the Swiss and Italian dukes. But, in the nineteenth century the town was promoted as a tourist spot on account of its natural beauty; over the years, the number of visitors has rapidly increased.

Overall Guide : The Villa Favorita, with its unique art collection and beautifully planned gardens, and the Villa Heleneum, with its collection of artefacts from distant places like Africa and Asia, are worth a visit. The Church of St. Mary of the Angels... more with its famed frescoes and the baroque-styled Cathedral of St. Lawrence are the other important structures in Lugano. The Parco Civico, along the border of the lake, is flanked by some important structures like a convention centre, a casino and an art museum. It is also the site for open-air concerts in the summer. The Swiss Miniature Village is a park which houses miniature forms of the important historical monuments of Switzerland. The city hosts two musical events in the summertime: the Jazz Festival in June and the Blues to Bop Festival in July and August.
