The Sforzesco Castle houses a number or small museums containing pieces of art of great masters and findings from archaeological digs in the Lombardy area. While in Milan, be sure to venture out into the Niagli area for some of the best designer boutiques of Europe or to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, the world’s oldest shopping mall. The grand Carthusian monastery in the nearby town of Pavia makes for a one-day trip from Milan; it is still home to some monks. Another neighbouring town is Cremona renowned for its pink marble cathedral and beautiful piazzas.
