Chiang Rai is the northernmost city of Thailand and the capital city of the Chiang Rai Province. It is situated on the Kok River Basin, with the Mae Kok River flowing through the city. Chiang Rai lies within the famous Golden Triangle region, the common meeting point of the borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos.
The city is nearly 800 km north of Bangkok. There are daily flights between the two cities, with bus services also available.
The average temperatures for Chiang Rai range from 11°C–35°C, with the heat being felt especially between the months of March and April. Maximum rainfall is experienced between July and August.
The city, known for its cultural and ethnic diversity, has a population of approximately 60,000 people. It was founded by King Mengrai in 1262 and thus bears historical significance.

Overall Guide : Chiang Rai is home to the Phrathat Doi Tung, a holy relic which draws Buddhist pilgrims from across the borders; the relic is situated on the 2000-metre-high Doi Tung Mountain (from where you can even see as far as Myanmar ... The Wat Phra Kaeo is a famous temple that used to house the Emerald Buddha (the holiest in Thailand), while the Wat Jet Yot has a striking Thai astrological fresco on its ceiling. Atop the Ngam Muang Hill, outside the city, you can find the Monument of King Mengrai, which is a stupa housing the ashes and relics of the city’s founder. Also visit other attractions like Doi Mae Salong (a mountain village offering a panoramic view from the top) and the Namtok Pu Kaeng, which is the largest waterfall in the province. Lastly, experience the Lychee Fair held every May; you could buy souvenirs like hill tribe silver ornaments or just sample delicacies like Naem and Mu Yo (preserved pork sausages).

Overall Guide : A great place to start off on your Thailand travels. Quieter but still busy enough in the right places. The markets are great to explores, the food markets are un-real. From chiang rai be sure to visit Monkey Cave & the White Temple.
