Jinja is a city in south-eastern Uganda. It is located on the shores of Lake Victoria, near the source of the White Nile River. It has an estimated population of 106,000 inhabitants.
Jinja was established by the British in 1901. It served as an administrative centre for the Provincial Government Headquarters for the Busoga region.
Formerly a fishing village, the city has developed into the second largest commercial centre in the country. Along with agriculture, the manufacturing sector forms the backbone of the local economy.
The majority of the population is of Bantu origin.

Overall Guide : The main attraction in Jinja is the Lake Victoria. Explore the lake and the source of the River Nile. Along the way you’ll spot coffee, tea and sugar plantations, the Owen Falls Dam and local fishing villages on Lake. ... more Visit the animal sanctuary at Buwenge. Or head to Buyuma, an island situated 25 km south, in the Lake Victoria. The island is a must for bird watchers. The best place to catch up with friends over a drink is the Rumours Pub at the Source of the Nile. It has a cosy restaurant deck located on the river shore and offers a fantastic sunset to diners. Make a trip to the famous Bujagani falls. Here you can try a hand at kayaking and white water rafting. You can also stop at the Ssezibwa Falls and the Mabira Forest, known for its primates, birds and butterflies. Some of Mahatma Gandhi's ashes were scattered over the White Nile at Jinja. Today there is a small memorial garden at the spot. There is also a Hindu temple near by.

Overall Guide : I can't forget the view of the John Speke pillar, spot where he stood and saw the source of the Nile. while at the shores on the Jinja side, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the spot across the... more nile, on Njeru side. Don't forget to look right across while in Jinja for this view. You can as well ask to cross by boat and stand right there. Alternatively, pick a bodaboda and cross using the famous railway bridge down stream. Enjo Jinja!

Overall Guide : Jinja is a place one ought not to miss when he/she visits Uganda, taking a look at the sources of the longest river in the world is breathtaking. However the road that leads to this amazing place is very narrow and... more has got a lot of potholes and many heavy long tracks besides that the place is full of breathtaking wanders from birds to the people who are ever smiling. This was worth it!

Overall Guide : The Jinja that i used to know when i was a kid is not the Jinja of today. Many towns in uganda are developing but with jinja its just falling apart. I have failed to understand why.
