Info about Cardiff

Area:
140 km2
Overview

Cardiff is in South Wales overlooking the Atlantic. This year (2005), it celebrates its centenary as a city and its 50th year as Wales' capital. Although very young, Cardiff is rapidly becoming an important European capital with a cosmopolitan feel and a dynamic atmosphere.
In recent years Cardiff Bay has changed dramatically, from its past as the world's largest coal exporting port to Europe's largest waterfront sport and leisure complex.
The bay has been turned into a vast freshwater lake with the construction of a barrier. A number of boat tours operate from Mermaid Quay, to help tourists learn about the history and fauna of this exciting area.
The city centre is impressive and varied in its architecture and is surrounded by acres of parkland.

Overall Guide : As the Capital of Wales, the city takes huge pride in promoting Welsh things. Cardiff is home to national charms such as the National Museum of Wales, the Museum of Welsh Life, and the newly built Wales Millennium... more Centre. Cardiff, moreover, has been chosen as a European Centre of Cultural Excellence. The magnificent Millennium Stadium, right at the heart of the city, is where you can watch major sporting events, concerts and conventions. Cardiff's Century is celebrated with an exhibition called: 100 Years of City Life, which explores all aspects of this city’s social history. Cardiff has a flourishing calendar of year-round events and is now established as a leading venue for a whole range of festivals, arts, music and sporting activities. There are many theatres around the city where you will find everything from West End shows, to opera, ballet, pop concerts or local productions. The capital's main pop venue, the Cardiff International Arena, regularly hosts big pop and rock shows. The whole music scene in Cardiff is thriving and many pubs and clubs offer live music. The Bay has many attractions such as the Techniquest Science Discovery Centre, The Welsh Assembly at the Pierhead, Butetown History and Arts Centre, Goleulong 2000 Lightship, the Norwegian Church Arts Centre and the brand new Wales Millennium Centre, a well-organized international arts centre. Cardiff also has a flourishing gay scene. The Cardiff Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is a festive weekend that takes place in September every year. Finally, you can also visit Spillers Records, which is the oldest record shop in the world!

Overall Guide : Go to see a rugby match at the Millennium Stadium or in a pub! Amazing atmosphere and warm welcome. Have a meal at Cardiff Marker, upstairs you can sit down and taste the local dishes: sausage, egg, ham, beans. A... more visit to Woodville on Thursday evening, Erasmus evening!
