Info about Southampton

51 km2

This thriving modern city of England proudly welcomes visitors from all over the world.
Southampton, being the largest city on the south coast of Hampshire County in the UK, covers an area of 51-81 sq/km.
It has a population of approximately 228,600, 7 % of which are non–white, which shows the diversity of the city.
It is a hot spot for shopping, sports, entertainment and food.
It is not only the greenest city of the region but has plenty of parks, open spaces, beaches and picturesque country lanes.
The moderate climate also adds to its charm. This important port city was formed by the Romans some 2000 years ago. A historically rich city, it was from here that the Mayflower sailed for the New World in 1620.
The Titanic, too, sailed towards its unfortunate destiny from here in 1912.
Southampton is also said to be the cruise capital of Europe. Rich culture thrives with music concerts, films, theatre, ballet, comedy clubs, opera and traditional pantomime.

Overall Guide : Southampton caters to all tastes, class and age groups when it comes to fun and entertainment. Actually, the city has many attractions to offer to its visitors. The Museum of Archaeology is a 13th century monument that displays collections from... more ancient times including Roman, Saxon and early Egyptian life. A heritage trail would take you to the 700 year old Merchant house of Fortin, a rich wine merchant. Southampton City art gallery, Solent Sky and Maritime Museum are worth a visit. Restaurants such as the Oxford Bar Restaurant, Langley Bristo and the Olive Tree offer an interesting spread of food and drinks. Nightclubs like the Ikon Diva, The Red Lion, and The Nexus Club ensure a promising nightlife. Live music bands can be enjoyed at the Platform Tavern at weekends. It has great places to shop, like the West Quay Complex, Marlands Mall and the Bargate Centre. The city hosts some interesting events as well like the Chinese New Year, Fireworks at the Mayflower park, the International Boat Show, Southampton Beer Festival and others.
