Situated in Clarke County and located along the north Oconee River at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Georgia, USA, Athens covers a total area of 306.2 sq km.
The climate is warm in summer where the average temperature is around 21°C, while the average temperature in winter is around 5°C. Rainfall is evenly distributed throughout the year.
Originally established as a small settlement at Cedar Shoals, it was incorporated as a city in 1806. This city, with a population of around 105,000, has preserved many of its historic neighbourhoods and landmarks.
Athens is home to the University of Georgia, the first state-supported university of America. Today, it is a centre of trade and commerce, health services and cultural arts. Tourism is a significant contributor to the economy.
