Huntington is located in the westernmost part of the state of West Virginia in the USA. This town with a population of approximately 49,000 inhabitants is nestled in a valley along the Ohio River.
Huntington experiences a humid climate, and temperatures are higher compared to other parts of West Virginia. During summers, the average maximum temperature is 30°C. Maximum snowfall is in the months of January and February.
When Huntington was established in 1870, it was a railroad town on the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. The town developed with the development of the chemical and coal industry in the region. Deindustrialisation in the 1970s caused the population of the town to shrink.
Today, Huntington is the second largest city in the state with an Old World charm and a thriving business centre. Restoration work and development of recreational facilities have been undertaken to attract tourism.
