Cotonou, in south-eastern Benin, is the economic capital of the country. Situated on the Gulf of Guinea, it is referred to as the Gateway to Benin.
Cotonou enjoys a tropical climate. The coastal region is generally hot and humid, and the best time to visit is July to September. The average monthly temperature ranges from 20-34 C.
Traditionally a port town, Cotonou is today the crossroad of West African commerce. As the biggest and busiest port in the region, it facilitates a majority of the city trade.
Home to a population of around 1.2 million people, the four largest ethnic groups here include the Fon, the Adja, the Bariba and the Yoruba. Most people are engaged in the manufacturing industries and at the port.
