I got an opportunity to travel Massa Lubrense which is popularly known as the legendary Land of Sirens. Beyond the legend, the presumed aborigines of the area were two: Ausons and Osci, of which, a while ago, it was found an inscription nearby the eastern shore of Punta Campanella. Its name was derived from the Longobard word ""mansa"", which defined a territorial unit, related to the Church of Madonna della Lobra, so named because it was built upon a pre-existing pagan temple, the guide said…Massa Lubrense is a municipality in the Province of Naples in the Italian region Campania, located about 25 km southeast of Naples. Massa Lubrense is the climatic center of the Sorrento Peninsula. The municipality of Massa Lubrense comprises the frazioni (subdivisions, mainly villages and hamlets) of Acquara, Annunziata, Casa, Marciano, Marina del Cantone, Marina della Lobra, Marina di Puolo, Metrano, Monticchio, Nerano, Pastena, San Francesco, Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi (location of the fjord Crapolla), Santa Maria della Neve, Schiazzano, Termini and Torca…the ones that I remember and have written for my reference in my travel book and Massa Lubrense borders only with the municipality of Sorrento. It has a triangular arrangement and borders at north-east with Sorrento, Gulf of Salemo on the left and Gulf of Naples on the right. The gulfs are unglued by the peak of Punta Campanella (historically called “Athenaeum promontory”) that faces the Island of Capli. This dazzling strip offers fantastic occasions for excursions both overland and underwater. Massa Lubrense is suitable for any sort of production: you will be able to taste sublime olive oil, fresh fruit, grapefruit, dairy products and cheeses. Outstanding pastures feed finest heifers, known as “Vitelle di Sorrento” and even the wine is extraordinarily good: the tradition to nurture grapevine in the ancient Greek way is still on! There are three wonderful points of interest: Ex-Cattedrale: a church dated back to 1512 and rebuilt in XVIII century, which keeps a pleasing 1700's majolica floor and, in the apse, a Madonna credited to Andrea da Salerno. Church of St Maria della Lobra: built in XVI century with a superb portal and a 1700's coffered top limit. At a distance of about 7 km from St Maria della Lobra, you will find the wonderful “Annunziata” cathedral, remade, with an elegant polychrome marbles slab. During the occasion of the Festival of the Patron Saint SS Salvatore, at Schiazzano, Massa Lubrense and in the days that follow, the Festival of the Fiordilatte, is celebrated, shared with an exhibition of agricultural products and crafts. The Festival of the Fiordilatte is an absolute feast of flavors of distinctive local dishes, and is meant to express the inclination of production, tourism and culture of the Lattari area. The Fiordilatte -fresh cow’s milk mozzarella is certainly the predominant dish and is ushered by homemade bread, tomatoes, vegetables and salami. This dependable degustation is shared with cultural events that speak of an area conscious of its societies.
