Ayr lies at the mouth of the River Ayr which flows into the Firth of Clyde.
The town's population registered in the 2001 Census was 46,431.
Being situated in the south west of Scotland, the area has a moderate temperate climate.
Ayr's shipping industry has flourished over the years mainly because of the River Ayr. Textiles such as carpets and linen are produced here.
Ayr has a number of things to attract tourists such as its pleasant sea front, the scenic surroundings, racecourses, theatres, bowling and swimming complexes. This county town of Ayr, in the heart of the Burns Country, is a modern, busy shopping centre, which is another attraction for tourists visiting the area.

Overall Guide : Nice scenery, nice, polite people, variety of scenic and historic places to visit, good variety of transportation and accommodations for rent, including family camp parks, plenty to keep kids organized, good variety of premises catering to older or more mature... more guests. Ayr offers a more relaxed atmosphere, yet is close to other entertainment and historical sites, Burns cottage for instance, Dunure Castle, and beautiful gardens. Do not miss the tourist bureaus, and the chance to talk to a local, (preferrably in his local) to gain the latest information.

Overall Guide : My husband & I visit Ayr lots of time a year. We always stay in the Mercure Hotel, previosly The Ramada, because it is so close to the towns high street. I think its a shame that so many of... more the shops have closed down. We always have a lovely quiet peasefull time there. We also visit the ex servisemans club on a sat night, where everyone is so friendy. We are coming to the Mercure Hotel on the 6th july till the 9th, then we are going to craig Tara fror the rest of the week. Agnes Herrity.
