The meeting point of old and new Cornwall, St Austell is larger than other towns of Cornwall.
The city has a population of 22,658 which is more than the population of the county’s capital.
Ttourists make a notable contribution to the economy during the summer. The St Austell Bay provides a spectacular and flamboyant range of scenery that makes St Austell a natural touring centre.
The place is also notable for its industrial archaeology and Stone Age.
Being the southernmost part of England, the winters are mild. Summers are relatively sunny and warm with over 1541 hours of sunshine per year. The mild, moist westerly winds from the Atlantic Ocean cause relatively high rainfall.
The main industry of the city is the China Clay industry employing over 3,000 people. However, now the industry is encompassing more creative industries like graphic design, photography, architecture and arts.

Overall Guide : Reminding us of how plants and people need each other for mutual survival, The Eden Project leads you into a fascinating world and an unforgettable experience. The biggest, scariest and funniest indoor play world for the kids is the Bens... more Play World with giant tubes, mega slides and ball pools. Experience the mining activities of the English China Clay at the 26 acre Wheal Matyn China Clay Heritage Centre. It also includes natural trail, working water wheel, pottery and picnic areas. Automobilia Cornwall’s Motor Museum offers you a ride through this thrilling exhibition of more than 50 vehicles. The Lost Gardens of Heligan, lost for 70 years and now restored as a ‘living museum’ is worth a visit. Charlestown Shipwreck and Heritage Centre is a favourite site for filmmakers all over the world. It is a working 18th century port harbouring square rigged sailing ships and a fabulous visitors’ centre.
