Alvin, also known as "The Babe on the Bayou”, is a city in Brazoria County, Texas, United States of America. It lies within the Houston-sugar land- Baytown metropolitan area. To the northwest of the city lies Houston. The city covers a total area of 17.3 square miles with 16.4 square miles of land and 0.9 square miles of water. The city has a total population of 21,413 as of 2000 with a population density of 1,237.8 per square mile. Alvin came into existence in the middle 18th century with the establishment of bull ranches in the area. The city was established on land originally granted to Houston Tap and Brazoria Railroad. The Santa Fe railroad shares a great hand in the establishment of the city.
The city also has oil deposits. The city was originally known as “Morgan” in the honour of Santa Fe employee Alvin Morgan. The city has a sex ratio of 49.8:50.2. The people of White origin and people of Afro American origin constitute the major part of the cities population.
