Martinsburg is located in the north-eastern part of the state of West Virginia in the USA. This town with a population of approximately 16,300 inhabitants is nestled in the Back Creek valley.
Summers in Martinsburg are very warm with the average daytime temperatures at 31.6°C; May is the wettest month. In the peak of winters, the temperatures may drop to as low as –5°C, but aggregate snowfall is less compared to the rest of the country.
Martinsburg was founded in the latter part of the eighteenth century. It was along the Cumberland Trail, an important thoroughfare in those times. Its location along with the industrialisation of the region played an important role in the development of the town.
Today, it is the administrative centre of the county of Berkeley. Restoration of the town’s architectural treasures has been undertaken in recent years to attract tourists.
